This remarkable, small tree of low, spreading habit has unusual leathery, almost triangular leaves with 3-5 shallow lobes which are widest at the apex. Commonly called blackjack oak, this tree grows to a compact 20-40' tall and it is often found with a very irregular form. Usually found growing in barren, dry sites including fields, woodland edges and dry ridges from New Jersey to Missouri and south to Florida and Texas. On mature trees, blackish bark appears in rough plates. S/M-D
