This elegant evergreen tree or large shrub is native to the low woods and thickets from North Carolina to Florida and west to Arkansas and Texas. Generally reaching 15-20' tall but may occasionally, in tree form, reach as much as 40' tall! The bark is smooth and gray to reddish brown contrasting well with the glossy-green foliage. This plant is easy-care! Transplants easily, withstands drought, heavy pruning, deer, and is tolerant of coastal conditions. Wonderful for pollinator gardens as it is a host plant for the Coral Hairstreak, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Red-Spotted Purple, Spring/Summer Azures, and Viceroy butterflies. White spring blossoms become purplish fruits which are eaten by songbirds. A hard to beat specimen for hedge too! S/M
