The following plants have been listed on the national &/or state (noted on the right) lists for potential invasiveness. You'll notice that the states are often all eastern or western/ northern or southern. That's because a plant might be potentially invasive in one climate, but hard to grow and useful in another. We grow many of the plants noted only as cultivars, many of which are sterile & thus not invasive. The vast majority of exotic plants are NOT invasive. In fact, most of the food we eat is exotic; "grapes" (Vitis) are listed by one state.
One of our first loves is native plants, however, so we ARE concerned about this problem. We hope you are too. We will stop growing plants that we believe could become a problem, and will note that possibility in the description. You could be part of the answer, as well. If a plant is listed for your state, don't buy it. If you have a dog, you don't let him/her attack other people, and hopefully you clean up after it! The same should be true of your garden--plant responsibly. We love the fragrance of butterfly bushes in late summer; the hummers & butterflies look forward to it as much as we do. We just need to be careful to cut off the seed heads before they spread to the neighbor's.
