In 1937, the great plantsman E.H.Wilson wrote (in Artistocrats of the Garden) "my plea is for quality and variety in the garden." We at Forestfarm try to provide both at a reasonable price...we just like plants! and work hard at growing as wide a selection of them as possible. We also care...a lot!...about you, our customers and friends. You're important to us and we do our utmost to make sure that the plants you receive from Forestfarm will be JUST RIGHT!. Although we started growing plants in 1974, every year we're amazed anew at the richness and diversity of the Plant Kingdom. Growing special plants is our great joy. A bit of history: In 1971, next to a granite-rimmed lake high in the Trinity Alps Wilderness (on our honeymoon, actually!), we decided that rather than pursuing any of the job avenues that we were considering, we wanted to "do something together, something away from the city, something constructive." Voila! the concept of Forestfarm was born. Little did we know what we were getting into!

We originally grew only native plants, perhaps 20 kinds. (We have a picture somewhere of the pile of metal cans that we collected from school cafeterias each week and then punched holes in with a can opener before planting!) Growing natives, at that time, was almost unheard of but there are so many wonderful natives and places where their use is really called for, that we tried it. Although we'll always love natives, we found that we were a good example of the quote "a garden is like those pernicious machineries which catch a man's coat-skirt or his hand, and draw in his arm, his leg, his whole body to irresistible destruction!" Over the years Forestfarm has developed into a collection of more than 5,000 kinds of plants from all over the world...we just like plants!

We originally worked alone but now employ 25-30 wonderful people, including, each year, 3-6 students from all over the world. Currently, they are from Hungary, France, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. This Forestfarm "family" not only shares their love of plants, but birthdays and water fights, as well! And all you need to do to join us is to call...a wonderful welcoming committee awaits your call. We're proud of what we do and the plants that we grow.

We originally wanted simply to grow plants (as well as earn enough to eat!). Over the years, our dream has expanded also, from just growing the plants, to finding a way to share the collection and our wonder of and respect for plants, today and in the future. The nonprofit Pacifica Garden and Education Center that is currently in its infancy is the culmination of that dream.
